INTRODUCTION
Reading and writing arguably go hand in hand. In order to read, somebody must write a book. Some readers are writers, and most writers are readers.
As such, to understand the history of reading, you must understand the history of writing; and some form of writing has existed since the dawn of recorded history. This site will consist of a surface-level dive into the legacy of putting ink to parchment, or chisel to stone.
THE BEGINNING OF BOOKS
The ability for humans to write has existed for millennia, with some of the earliest writings being etched into stone tablets. Eventually papyrus became more popular, and once paper reached the public, reading and writing became far more accessible.
An example of a modernly well-known instance of clay tablets being used for writing is the complaint tablet to Ea-Nasir, a trader, in ancient Mesopotamia. The writer of the complaint, Nanni, accused Ea-Nasir of selling him poor-quality copper. In Mesopotamia, there are many other examples of these clay tablets being used, such as for religious texts and poetry, as well as legal documents.
